Organizers: Prof. Gyan Prakash and Prof. R. Thangadurai
Aim of the Workshop:
The famous celebrated result of Szemeredi states that a subset of positive integers having a positive upper density contains arbitrarily long arithmetic progressions. This particular result of Szemeredi has various proofs including the one using combinatorics by Szemeredi, one using analysis and combinatorics by Gowers and one using ergodic theory by Furstenberg. This workshop will try to cover these three proofs and indicate the recent developments in the subject.
Preliminary workshop:
During 20th September, 2011 to 25th September, 2011, Harish-Chandra Research Institute organizes a preliminary workshop on the above topics to cover the basics. Interested people can apply. Limited fund is available to cover the selected partcipants' travel, food, etc. during the workshop period. This workshop is supported by HRI under the XIth plan project "Special years in Mathematics".
